After Capaldi Confirmed His Exit from Doctor Who, Rumors of Potential Replacements Rise

Peter Capaldi announced Monday that he would be stepping down from his titular role in the long-running BBC show Doctor Who, and already, speculation has begun as to who should, and would, be cast as the 13th Doctor.  According to EW, UK-based bookmakers William Hill have already begun offering odds and taking bets on who will be cast, with the best odds going to Ben Whishaw at 6/1.  Others on the list include Rory Kinnear and Rupert Grint, both of whom are currently sitting at 8/1.  Billie Piper, the Doctor’s first companion when the show returned back in 2005, also has a spot on the list, coming in at 20/1.

Ben Whishaw is most well known for his role as James Bond’s Quartermaster, ‘Q’, beginning in Skyfall (2012) and continuing on through the latest of the Bond movies, Spectre (2015).  He also played multiple parts in the 2012 movie Cloud Atlas, alongside Tom Hanks and Halle Berry.  He is voicing the role of Paddington in the Paddington 2 sequel, out this year.  In 2018,  he will be playing the role of a grown up Michael Banks in Mary Poppins Returns, alongside other stars Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke, and Colin Firth.

Rory Kinnear is also a James Bond movie regular, first appearing in Quantum of Solace (2008) as MI6’s Chief of Staff, Bill Tanner.  He has reprised the role, both as a voice actor in several James Bond video games, and in every Bond movie since his first appearance in Quantum.  Kinnear also starred in the Showtime series Penny Dreadful throughout the show’s 2014-2016 run, alongside other Doctor Who star Billie Piper.  His heart-wrenching portrayal of John Clare, most commonly known as Frankenstein’s Monster, won him the 2014 Satellite award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television.

Rupert Grint is, of course, best known for his work as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, alongside his co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.  Grint also reprised his role in the Harry Potter video games.  Since the last movie in the Harry Potter series, he has acted in multiple different TV Series, including Sick Note and Snatch.

Personally, my money is on Rory Kinnear, but then again, I’m a sucker for his Penny Dreadful performance.  Who do you think is the best fit to play the 13th Doctor?  Are they on this list?  Is it someone else?   Let us know in the comments section below, and as always, stay tuned to DFTG for all your gaming news needs!
