Hitman Dev’s New James Bond Game Could Start A New 007 Trilogy (VIDEO)

Hitman 007 James Bond

Though IO Interactive is currently cultivating success with the finale of its Hitman reboot trilogy, the acclaimed studio has already landed another gig in the form of a new James Bond video game tentatively titled Project 007. As the project was only recently announced, little information regarding the game has had a chance to surface. However, it appears the new title could be the start of an all-new trilogy, as indicated in a recent developer interview.

According to an exchange with Danish outlet DR (via VG247, TheGamer), IO Interactive director Hakan Abrak confirmed the studio is currently pursuing a “completely original story” for the upcoming 007 game, following its own continuity and featuring an all-new version of the James Bond character. Most interestingly, Abrak went as far as to suggest he could “easily imagine that a trilogy could come out of it,” hinting at plans for a dedicated series based on the iconic spy franchise.

It’s very, very special – a boy’s dream. Sometimes it’s still a little hard to understand that it’s us [making] James Bond.”

Having free reign to craft an all-new James Bond game is sure to be an exciting endeavor for the Hitman dev team. That being said, Abrak indicated the process of actually landing the project was an arduous task all its own. In fact, IO spent nearly two years preparing a pitch for 007 production house Eon, namely, company heads Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Broccoli was cited as being unhappy with the direction of previous James Bond games, referring to them as not “worthy enough” and simply featuring “violence for the sake of violence.”

Looking back at a number of past James Bond games, it’s not difficult to see how Broccoli may have reached this conclusion. With the exception of kart-racer 007 Racing, many 007 games often rely on explosive set-pieces and mowing down countless waves of anonymous henchmen, a stark contrast to even the most homicidal of Bonds featured in films (looking at you, Pierce Brosnan). It’s no surprise to learn IO Interactive eventually sold Eon on its pitch, especially considering how tastefully the studio approached a profession as malicious as a Hitman.

Whether it be for a new 007 franchise or something else entirely, IO Interactive appears to be preparing for a heap of new projects in the meantime. With the Hitman trilogy completed, Hakan Abrak also revealed plans for IO to expand “over the next few years,” increasing its current team of 200 employees to over 400 with the opening of a new Sweden-based studio. Despite this growth, it appears a certain MI6 agent will continue to remain front and center for the time being. “There is no doubt that the Bond agreement means an insane amount to us,” Abrak concluded.
