Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 2 Teases Battle Royale Mode (VIDEO)

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 2 Teases Battle Royale Mode (VIDEO)

After more than a few leaks, yesterday finally saw Season 2 arrive for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, introducing new a slew of new updates to maps, items, and the return of old-school MW2 character Simon “Ghost” Riley. As players flock to experience all these notable new additions, it appears the incoming season may be gearing up for another big inclusion in the form of the game’s long-rumored battle royale mode.

As seen in the new intro cinematic for Modern Warfare Season 2 (H/T Prima Games), Ghost can be seen arriving on a battle-stricken scene in Verdansk, responding to an armed group engaging in widespread friendly fire. Interestingly, one of the soldiers makes mention of a cloud of gas “closing in,” followed shortly by a green-colored smoke shown descending on the large-scale map. The footage ends with the timely arrival of a dropship, featuring several characters leaping from the plane and parachuting into the area. Check it out below.

While not outright referred to as “battle royale,” the above video certainly hints at an experience similar to the popular shooter mode. Engaging in all-versus-one firefights, a deadly barrier closing in all directions, and soldiers airdropping into battle is very much reminiscent of games like Apex Legends and Fortnite. However, Modern Warfare Season 2 looks to have a story in mind for its version of the all-out deathmatch (a la PUBG), as suggested by Ghost’s “need to find out why” line spoken in the scene’s closing moments.

A lore-based means of introducing battle royale to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is definitely an intriguing idea, especially if the result is approached with the same grounded nature as the majority of the game’s content. The COD series has previously brought the mode to the forefront with Blackout in Black Ops 4 and COD Mobile, but the mode has yet to join the ranks of Modern Warfare, making for a pretty interesting time when it might finally be added to the game.

As there has yet to be any official word from Activision or Infinity Ward, it’s probably best to keep expectations in check before excepting any of this as actual fact. With that said, this video hasn’t been the only emerging tease hinting at the mode’s eventual introduction to Modern Warfare. An update to the game’s title menu for Season 2 has seemingly hinted at the imminent arrival of a new mode, with a “Classified” entry now sitting front and center alongside other central modes such as Campaign, Co-op, and Multiplayer. Could this be a sign of that Modern Battle Royalefare is finally upon us? Only time will tell.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
