Batman Wields A Kryptonite Infinity Gauntlet In Dark Nights: Metal

Kryptonite Infinity Gauntlet

As evidenced by an epic trailer, Avengers villain Thanos is currently on the lookout for those darn Infinity Stones in an effort to assemble the all-powerful Infinity Gauntlet. While this task has yet to happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it looks as though DC’s Batman has beat the Mad Titan to the punch, wielding his own kryptonite Infinity Gauntlet in response to Dark Nights: Metal‘s latest story twist. Spoilers for Dark Nights: Metal #4 follow.

DC Comics’ over the top Metal storyline has been quite the ride so far. The first few issues famously introduced an army of evil Batmen, each based on Batman / Bruce Wayne’s biggest insecurities. This intense plot was orchestrated by the demonic entity Barbatos, a self-appointed “Bat God” with aspirations of unleashing the Dark Multiverse.

A recent development saw Barbatos swap out his twisted legion of Dark Knights for Nightmare Supermen, giving birth to numerous evil incarnations of the Man of Steel. This time, the fears of Clark Kent are on full display, taking the form of dozens of horrible abominations that were never meant to be. These include a Lex Luthor-armored Superman, a variant of Electric Superman, and a dark Superman-Batman mash-up, the latter of which provides our Batman with what appears to be a kryptonite Infinity Gauntlet.

If the idea of Batman taking on a squad of evil Supermen wasn’t metal enough, the multi-colored super-weapon is called the “Five Finger Death Punch,” a moniker shared with the heavy metal band of the same name. The device itself is also made of metal, embedded with “every color kryptonite from gold to periwinkle.”

These moments of metal have been purposefully scattered throughout the Metal storyline by writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo, with more than a few chaotic shake-ups expected for the future. For example, the latest issue’s particularly metal ending saw an evil cosmic dragon bring forth an unending chasm of dark nightmare realities. Anyone else holding up the horns right now? Dark Nights: Metal #4 is available now in comic shops, with issue #5 hitting stores on January 31.

What do you think? Is DC cashing in on Thanos’ obsession with Infinity Stones, or is calling it a “kryptonite Infinity Gauntlet” doing the Death Punch a disservice?
