Assassin’s Creed Goes Rogue with Less Scripting for Future Games
Since the release of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate just over a year ago, the fans of the franchise seem to have lost quite a bit of the enthusiasm previously displayed for the series. This lack of enthusiasm is due to various reasons. One of the most prominent reasons would be an uneven level of quality between games due to a shift towards annual release rather than a slower approach. Another feature that might detract from the enthusiasm for the franchise is the lacking effect that the free roam game play has on the scripted story line. As an avid fan of the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise, even I can attest to slight disappointment of the detached nature between the free roam missions and the main story line.
Well good news for fans of the Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Franchise. Recently in an interview with CCO Serge Hascoet, we received confirmation that Ubisoft will be making an effort to place greater focus on freedom of choice in its upcoming games. The developers are planning on veering the franchise away from strictly scripted story lines to allow the players a more open and customizable gaming experience.
In an effort to reinvigorate players, Ubisoft has adopted a new philosophy to game design, taking a less scripted approach to all future games, starting with the next Assassin’s Creed title.
Taking cues from their recent success with Far Cry Primal and recently released Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft developers are moving toward a philosophy of letting players interact more with the game world and giving the player more control over the decision of if and when to return to the main story. This creates an atmosphere of a more lively game. Along with the “less scripted approach” philosophy, the developers will be shifting the Assassin’s Creed franchise back away from annual releases in order to maintain a more even quality between releases, as we saw with the Ezio Trilogy.
Fans looking for any new information on the upcoming Assassin’s Creed are out of luck, however, as Hascoet reaffirmed that the company is taking a slower and more calculated approach with it. The new entry will be back once it’s ready in order to create a greater experience for players.
In a basic summary, Ubisoft is going to be creating a more open and immersive experience with future Assassin’s Creed games allowing more control of in-game events to be made at the players discretion. As well the developers are going to slow down a bit as far as releases go and take their time in production so that they can ensure the highest quality experience for their fanbase.
As a fan of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, I am very glad to see that Ubisoft is not letting such a beloved series slip into obscurity. It’s good the see developers paying attention to their fan base and making adjustments in their formula to create an amazing gaming experience. What are your thoughts on the change-up in game style? We’d love to hear your input.
