Xbox One 4K Webcams Reportedly Coming Soon
While the news hasn’t been confirmed from Microsoft, rumor has it that the companies are currently developing 4K resolution webcams for Windows and their Xbox One console series. According to acclaimed technology journalist, Paul Thurrot, Microsoft is at work in creating multiple webcams with 4K capabilities for the aforementioned platforms. Given how long ago the Kinect launched or any series of webcams have been released by the technology giant, it’s certainly the right time to get back into the game.
While Microsoft has developed built-in camera for the laptops and tablets (i.e. Surface Pro series), they’ve yet to introduce a standalone product in years. While the features of the upcoming hardware revival for both Microsoft and Xbox is purely speculative based on insider sources, Thurrot believes the company will make up for the gaps the Kinect could not provide in previous years. It seems probable that the console webcam version will allow player to automatically sign-in via body movement.
According to his sources, the new technology “might be tied in some way to the new USB-C-based webcam,” which will likely launch with the Surface Hub 2. “I’ve been told that one Microsoft webcam will be enterprise-focused, and I’m wondering if this isn’t, in fact, the same camera that will be used with Surface Hub 2,” says Thurrott. “Certainly, a Surface-branded webcam with Windows Hello capabilities makes a lot of sense.
As for the matters of logistics, it’s uncertain how Microsoft and company will retail the rumored new hardware. However, analysts say the codenamed Xbox Scarlett, which is anticipated to replace the Xbox One series, will likely arrive with two separate versions that will offer support for virtual reality and streaming. A separate analyst from IDC believes the next generation of gaming consoles is projected for launch in 2021. With all of that accounted for, perhaps Microsoft will have both standalone and bundled products for Xbox One and their next gen platform?
That seems much too long of a wait however. Furthermore, Thurrot specifically mentions the Xbox One. For now, we await official news.
