Throwback Thursday: Sony’s Weird ‘PlayStation 9’ Commercial (VIDEO)
The early 2000s was an exciting time for gaming and PlayStation 2 was sitting atop competitors as the most successful console of that generation. At a point, Sony surely saw its sales domination leading to numerous hardware iterations down the line. Whether by marketing joke or an amazing show of ambition, the company saw fit to deliver a vision of this far potential future and showcase the power of the PlayStation 9.
What would gaming be like in nearly a century’s time? Sony left their answer in the form of a commercial, giving a look at an advanced console one might expect from the year 2078 (or at least a bizarre sci-fi version of it). Sony’s proposed “PS9” boasted mind-altering electronic spores, telepathic DualShock control, and trippy holographic projections, all features that likened to brain-augmented VR rather than a traditional screen-based experience. Check out all the weirdness below.
While not expressly advertising a ridiculously far-off console, the commercial was likely attempting to convey the endless possibilities of the PlayStation brand, more specifically the PS2 hardware at the time. Still, with a few intriguing ideas in the above advertisement, Sony may have painted themselves into a corner when the year 2078 actually does roll around. Hopefully in the next 60 years, mankind can finally prefect breathable machine-melding spore technology so our generation’s grandkids can enjoy this proper vision of the PlayStation 9.
