DFTG Recaps The Latest Movie/TV Trailers: September 17th (VIDEO)

DFTG Movie TV Trailers September 17 2018

Full disclosure here. The last week was so loaded to the brim with awesome TV previews, including a worthwhile slate of film trailers was a bit on the difficult side. As the movie season temporarily takes a breather, Netflix has more or less stepped in to dominate the latest round of hype, with genres such as animation, superheroes, and westerns all getting their time in the sun. Check out the list below as DFTG recaps the biggest movie and TV trailers of the week.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

The first inclusion and one of the few movies on this list is Netflix’s upcoming The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a quirky western from acclaimed Oscar-winning duo the Coen Brothers. Originally envisioned as a series (go figure), the anthology comprises six stories that follow a cast of unusual characters ranging from a doomed hangman (James Franco), a cartoonish gunslinger (Tim Blake Nelson), to whoever the heck Liam Neeson is playing.

Having the accomplished spectrum of comedy (The Big Lebowski) and the Old West (True Grit) under their belts, the Coens’ forthcoming ‘Ballad’ looks to pull ample amounts from both avenues. Everything from the exciting cast, offbeat narrative, to its beautiful filmmaking seem to have all the trappings of a Coen classic. We’ll get to judge that for ourselves when The Ballad of Buster Scruggs rides over to Netflix on November 16th.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 1

Well then, this certainly isn’t the bubbly sitcom we all grew up with. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina instead seems hell-bent on embracing it’s magical premise from a pitch-black perspective, presenting an ominous tone and much more Baphomet imagery than fans are likely accustomed. So far removed of the previous 90s depiction, the chilling new adventure likens to a lost season of American Horror Story than anything else.

Arriving from the producers of Riverdale (because of course), Sabrina’s occult run amok isn’t entirely based in the practice of edgy reboots. A dark reimagining of the classic Archie character was introduced in a 2014 comic series and went on to become a popular hit to the delight of horror fans. The live-action version looks like it’ll keep the same haunting spirit alive when Season 1 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on Netflix this October 26th.

Daredevil Season 3

Oh look, more devil imagery! Just like the titular hero himself, a new trailer for Marvel’s Daredevil stealthily appeared from the shadows for the show’s long-awaited third season. There isn’t much to gather about where he left off in The Defenders, but what we do see is a distraught Matt Murdock as he struggles with his standing as the savior of Hell’s Kitchen. The normally-horned hero is notably donning his black costume from the first season, leaving it open whether the scene is a flashback or a back to basics outing is in order. Season 3 of Daredevil is currently scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2018.

Maniac Limited Series

We’ve all got problems, right? Some just have more maniacal ones than others. The debuting miniseries Maniac looks to solve these kind of issues for good over a trippy 10-part story. The show premises a doctor’s cure-all for mental illness as it enters its testing phase, drawing in two especially-troubled characters played by Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. The brain-bending procedure takes the duo on a roller-coaster ride through the mind, confronting their problems through numerous fantastic settings and situations along the way.

Outside this initial premise, there doesn’t seem to be much else story-wise to gather from the trailer, but that’s to be expected in an abstract movie such as this. The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind instantly comes to mind as both seem to take pride in their emotional storytelling and creating numerous visually-trippy fantasy worlds. Maniac makes its Netflix premiere on September 21st.

Mary Poppins Returns

We haven’t had any proper trailers for Mary Poppins Returns since back in March, but luckily Disney has finally seen fit to deliver the splendor we’ve all been waiting for! As presented above, we can see a dazzling display of nostalgia rush into our eyeballs in the form of bright musical numbers, a beautiful cast of characters, and yes, even old-school animated sections! All in all, the return of Mary Poppins teases an experience nothing short of magical (and no, not the Sabrina kind). Mary Poppins Returns soars into theaters on December 19th.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power  Season 1

Lastly, Netflix debuted the first look at She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, a modern reboot of the classic Masters of the Universe spin-off. The original 80s cartoon envisioned the heroine as the lost twin of He-Man, with She-Ra also possessing the fantastic ability to transform via her mystical Sword of Protection. She-Ra’s new iteration showed us this metamorphosis in its first trailer, featuring a new streamlined art style and an earful of the character’s iconic battlecry: “For the honor of Grayskull!” She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will debut on Netflix November 16th.
