Rainbow Six Siege Developers Express “No Regrets” Over Bans

Rainbow Six Siege

If you’ve played an online game, you’ve likely encountered some form of hacking, and Rainbow Six Siege has not been immune from players who take advantage of bugs or otherwise cheat. Of course, neither has any online multiplayer title been immune from the kind of toxic interactions that make players feel unwelcome and threatened.

With Rainbow Six Siege rolling out updates regularly to combat both cheating and toxicity, some wonder if it is hurting their bottom line or the size of their community. The response by Ubisoft is one players looking for a fair and supportive community can definitely get behind. Ultimately, the company has zero regrets with throwing the ban hammer. Brand Director Alexandre Remy recently had a few things to say about the company’s feelings regarding banning.

“The ban system is going strong, actually, and we feel very strongly about the system,” they said in a recent interview. “That system is going to be evolving too. Today, the system means that any player that uses homophobic or racial slurs in our chat will automatically receive a temporary ban. After three temporary bans you get permanently banned. That is a very, very strong stance from Ubisoft and from the game about how we want to deal with toxicity in the game.”

That feature will evolve as we develop in the future, we plan to add filtering systems to stop those words even showing up at all in the chat, so it’s going to be a little more flexible.”

While some might feel that this stance in Rainbow Six Siege is an infringement of free speech, Remy has an interesting take on that argument. What Ubisoft is aiming for is respect among players. According to the Brand Director, it isn’t about freedom or equality, rather it is about creating the most respectful community they can.
