Devs Tease The Witcher Franchise’s Return, But Don’t Call It “The Witcher 4”
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt finished the story of Geralt of Rivia and CD Projekt Red has made it clear that they won’t be returning to the character. While Geralt was fascinating in his own right, there are many characters that are equally captivating – each that rightfully deserve more spotlight time. Geralt’s voice actor has even suggested that Ciri become the focus of the next title in the franchise, though whether there would be a “next title” has been up in air.
CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski recently sat down in an interview to discuss where the Witcher franchise could go now that Geralt’s tale is done. While the developers do want to continue building the world of the Witcher, the next title won’t be called “The Witcher 4.”
The first three Witchers were by definition a trilogy, so we simply could not name the next game The Witcher 4. This does not mean, of course, that we will leave the world of The Witcher, created by us for over a dozen years. The Witcher is one of two franchises on which to build in the future activities of the company. Today, unfortunately, I can not reveal anything more.”
For now the developers are focusing on Cyberpunk 2077, which is understandable. The launch of the futuristic adventure is still potentially years away and the sheer size of it alone demands the dev team’s full attention.
There may not be another Witcher title for a while but hopefully the upcoming TV series will arrive sooner rather than later to fill the void until then.
