PUBG Replay System Developer Now Offering Monetized In-Game Ads

PUBG Replay

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds implemented several much-needed features when the game finally hit version 1.0 late last year. Features like climbing & vaulting and additions like the Miramar map had previously been teased several months in advance, while the game’s death cam and replay features were discussed and tested closer to the release of 1.0. Now it appears that the dev company behind the PUBG replay feature has found a way fro publishers to monetize their games.

Minkonet is the company responsible for the PUBG replay and death cam features within the game, with their video technology allowing players to look back at entire matches in order to replay their best moments and most soul-crushing defeats. Now, the company is offering publishers a unique service; publishers can now choose to sell ads in-game that players will only see when utilizing replay or death cam features.

When abused, this can make a lot of players angry. No one wants to  pay full price for a AAA title only to find that their gameplay is riddled with obvious ads to things like soft drinks and sneakers. On the plus side, according to VG247, Minkonet has stated that the ads will only be visible when gamers are watching replays of games, thus minimizing the impact.

Minkonet has also stated that ads will either change or replace objects already found in-game, so playing a game where your character drives by an empty billboard may reveal itself to be a Razer gaming peripherals ad when looking at the same scene via replay. The ads also have the potential of being interactive, possibly rewarding players for running up and interacting with them. Of course, all this seems like it will be on a case by case basis, so it will be interesting to see which publishers choose to utilize the tech moving forward.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now available for PC and Xbox One. PUBG Mobile is also available for Android and iOS devices.
