Pokemon GO Gym Dispute Leads Man To Attack Players With Tire Iron

The untimely occurrence of the White House decidedly taking action against the video games and events like these are unfortunate. In the latest incident, an unlikely argument over the dispute of a Pokemon Go gym led a Washington state man to attack fellow players with a tire iron.

In Vancouver, Washington, Andrew Otton and his two friends were reportedly relaxing at a park called Burnt Bridge Creek Trail when a stranger pulls up in a car. Out of the blue, he began charging at them and demanded to talk with a player named “Andy”. It wasn’t long after that Otton discovered he was upset about their recent conquest of a nearby gym. This was Otton’s recollection of the events:

He comes out of nowhere, yelling, ‘Which one of you is Andy?’ with a tire iron in his hand. My [Pokemon GO] username is AndySamberg, so he was looking for the Andy guy and I was just reviving my Pokemon when he was trying to take it out.

I took it from him and I didn’t know he just took it, and he was like, ‘Hey, did you just take this gym from me? That’s pretty messed up, man.’ He was very angrily saying it.”

Following the stranger’s accusation, Otton’s friend Grayson Hagstrom attacked the man with several punches, arguing that he wanted to make the first move before the situation escalated. “I got behind him and started choking him,” said Hagstrom. “I figured if he didn’t have consciousness, he wouldn’t be that tough.”

It was later discovered that the perpetrator’s name is Stephen Jolly, who claims that his tire iron was used to hit a nearby table and did not get physical or punch any of the three men. Despite that, Hagstrom and Otton reveal that their clash over the Pokemon GO gym involving Jolly wasn’t the first in the area.

We posted about it on Facebook and showed his license plate. Other people told us he’s done this before and we were just the first to stop him.”

The Vancouver police does not hold any evidence to substantiate their claims. Jolly does reportedly have mental health issues, but does not consume drugs or alcohol. In the end, he will be charged with assault and malicious mischief.

That certainly wasn’t what the Hagstrom, Otton, and their friend were expecting while out on a stroll to catch Pokemon and capture a Pokemon GO gym.
