A Pirate’s Life for All – Sea of Thieves Cross-Play Officially Confirmed
Amid the bountiful announcements already made known at Xbox’s Gamescom event, Microsoft has also revealed the new treasure that awaits Rare’s pirate-themed action game Sea of Thieves. Developers have implemented an inclusive cross-play feature between PC and Xbox One editions of the open-world swashbuckler, allowing players from either platform to pillage and plunder together. Sea of Thieves cross-play arrived on the game’s latest closed alpha immediately following the announcement.
Cross-play has been slowly growing in availability as of late, with multiplayer favorites such as Minecraft and Rocket League adopting multi-network functionality. Along with Sea of Thieves cross-play, the game will also sport upgraded Xbox One X enhancements, offering 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. The PC version has considerably more relaxed limitations in its support for ultrawide displays and an unlocked framerate.
Revealed back in 2015, the release date for Sea of Thieves has been pushed back a number of times in the past, but the game was last aiming to set sail sometime in 2018. Developer Rare’s ambition to craft a unique multiplayer experience likely contributes to the delay, but with a larger wealth of content seems like a worthwhile trade-off for just a year’s wait.
What do you think? Are you excited to play Sea of Thieves with your console brethren, or are you more of a platform purist? Are you waiting for a Switch port first?
