George R.R. Martin Reveals That At Least One New Game of Thrones Book Will Release in 2018
Game of Thrones season 7 is off to an incredibly strong start with record-breaking reactions to the first two episodes of an incredibly short season. With season 7 underway and season 8 marking the end, readers of the books behind the popular HBO show are anxiously awaiting word from the author himself as to when they can anticipate more from the series. We’ve got some good news and bad news. Author George R.R. Martin took to his site to announce that at least one new book in the Song of Ice and Fire universe will be releasing next year. That’s the good news. The bad news (which could end up not being bad at all) is that the book he is talking about isn’t the long-awaited title The Winds of Winter. What makes it not so cut and dry bad news is that he said the release of that particular title could also be released in 2018, though it is still currently under revision.
The world of Westeros is huge, where every backstory had fifty more backstories and every character is seems entwined in an intricate tapestry of history. Martin saw this as a challenge and decided to compile a History of Westeros compilation. The history is so large, however, that the compendium will be spliced into two volumes, the first planned for a late 2018 release.
The author made this statement in his recent “Not a Blog” post:
We have so much material that it’s been decided to publish the book in two volumes. The first of those will cover the history of Westeros from Aegon’s Conquest up to and through the regency of the boy king Aegon III (the Dragonbane). That one is largely written, and will include (for the first time) a complete detailed history of the Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons.”
But The Winds of Winter hopefuls haven’t been left out of the news loop either, Martin recognized that there is still a large amount of anticipation regarding the next release and he pulls no punches when addressing both the status of the book and the fake reports surrounding his “nefarious” reasons behind the next installment’s progression. In short, those reports? All bullshit:
And, yes, I know you all want to know about THE WINDS OF WINTER too. I’ve seen some truly weird reports about WOW on the internet of late, by ‘journalists’ who make their stories up out of whole cloth. I don’t know which story is more absurd, the one that says the book is finished and I’ve been sitting on it for some nefarious reason, or the one that says I have no pages. Both ‘reports’ are equally false and equally moronic. I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that’s all I care to say. Whether WINDS or the first volume of FIRE AND BLOOD will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018… and who knows, maybe two. A boy can dream…”
