Fans of the comic book from Image Comics co-founder Todd McFarlane will be excited to know that the creator has found a studio to take on his new Spawn movie reboot. Blumhouse, known for The Purge, The Belko Experiment, and Paranormal Activity are going to tackle the film with McFarlane at the helm directing. The project is budgeted this far at around $10 million. McFarlane has said that financing has been a major focus, but his choice of audience may surprise some fans hoping the film will release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe vein.

It’s slowly moving forward, just trying to put all the pieces together both from an artistic and a financial. The intent is trying to finance as much as possible internally and then finding partners who will help in the production of it as we move forward. I can argue getting the money might be harder than getting everybody signed off on the story. What I can tell you is what I’ve told everybody else: it will be a definite R. I’m not going for the same crowd that Marvel and DC is going for; I’m going for the same crowd that horror film releases going for. People who want to take their boyfriend or girlfriend or go out with the girls and go to the movies and get spooked.”

The film is definitely going to be horror focused, the screenplay being called a “dark exploration of one of comics’ most popular characters”. With the number of years McFarlane has been working on a new Spawn movie reboot, fans can expect more of the grit they got in the comics as the writer/director has much more creative control. With R-rated comic book films becoming more common, the movie will likely be well received by those who love the series, and those who may just be dipping their toes for the first time.

I’d put it more into horror/suspense/supernatural genre. If you take the movie The Departed meets Paranormal Activity, something like that.”

The prospect of a new Spawn movie reboot with McFarlane in the driver’s seat definitely makes for an awesome prospect. As was the case with the original film, creative direction wound up more in the hands of the studio, leaving fans a bit upset over it. The announcement came at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and while no release date is set yet, the gears being in motion is exciting to hear.
