A new entry in the long-running Saw franchise is happening whether we want more gory, horrific traps or not. We recently learned that a new movie in the series will be titled Jigsaw, named after the films’ psychotic trap architect and will continue on after the events that concluded 2010’s Saw 3D. Now, alongside new plot details, the first image from the upcoming sequel has been released, featuring actress Laura Vandervoort about to be buried alive in one of Jigsaw’s many traps.

Jigsaw is set to arrive in late October, keeping with the traditional Halloween release date the last seven Saw movies have used in the past. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, directing duo and brothers Michael & Peter Spierig shared their experience working on the film, saying the end result may not be as brutal as previous entries have been. Michael shared their thoughts in more detail:

We’ve got some pretty wild traps in the film. We don’t shy away from the gore. It’s such a perfect Halloween scarefest. [But] it’s perhaps not quite as vicious; it’s more fun, which is something we tried to inject into it.”

This new “fun” direction doesn’t mean the filmmakers are letting up on the blood buckets just yet. They promise to deliver the “good fun gore” that fans are expecting and the mysterious twists that usually unravel in each film’s closing moments.

It is anyone’s guess what Jigsaw could be about, as the original killer played by actor Tobin Bell met his end in Saw 3 with various henchmen picking up the mantle in subsequent films. The Spierig brothers wouldn’t disclose much, with co-director Peter only revealing the film would follow a series of murders carried out by a presumed “Jigsaw copycat”. Though, Michael would go on to tease that “the DNA of Tobin Bell is all over this film”, hinting at some sort of appearance from the character.
