For 40 years, the faceless lawman Judge Dredd has delivered justice to the crime-ridden, dystopian city of Mega-City One from within the pages of the British comic book 2000AD. The character has earned long-lasting appeal because of his unrelenting respect for the law, with the hero often delivering the maximum allowed punishment to any and all who break the rules. It seems like we can look forward to seeing the Judge’s violent exploits on screen soon, because according to a recent report, 2000AD is being adapted into a live-action television show titled Judge Dredd: Mega City One. According to Entertainment Weekly, independent studio IM Global and game/comic book publisher Rebellion have struck a deal to head up production on a TV show based around the character of Judge Dredd and his fellow Judge co-workers. The new series will prove to be much more unique than standard cop procedurals, as 2000AD‘s police are granted all the powers of the criminal justice system: judge, jury, and executioner. The reasoning for these extreme measures is attributed to the desperate need for quickly-dispensed punishment in the commonly chaotic atmosphere of Mega City One.

So far, Judge Dredd has been portrayed in two feature film adaptations. The first, 1995’s Judge Dredd, saw action movie veteran Sylvester Stallone take on the role, but this version was ultimately criticized for the decision to feature the character without his iconic helmet. In contrast, the comic version of Dredd had never been seen without the fixture, as it established the lawman as a immovable stickler for the rules. A rebooted adaptation, 2012’s Dredd, was much more faithful, including the helmet’s permanent placement atop star Karl Urban‘s head.

As for the upcoming Judge Dredd: Mega City One series, it’s unknown as of late which network will air the program, when it will premiere, or who will eventually put on the titular character’s uniform. One thing that can be certain is that whoever is chosen will definitely be wearing that helmet.
