He-Man Makes His Return as Masters of the Universe Reboot Film Prepares for its 2019 Release
My fellow He-Man fans, brace yourselves – nostalgia is coming and could really go either way. Whether the film reboot of a beloved franchise will be a complete disaster or absolute perfection is still up in the air, but regardless of our hesitant hopes, it is happening and now has a time-frame for when we can expect it. The Masters of the Universe reboot movie is currently in the works and is slated for a December 2019 release in theaters everywhere.
According to EW, “He-Man has the power – but he doesn’t have a director”. McG, previously known for his work on Charlie’s Angels, is no longer attached to the Masters of the Universe project. This leaves Sony to continue their search, but sources claim that David S. Goyer (Batman Begins) is taking the helm for the screenplay.
Though the film is currently without a director, the film’s release date is set and the team’s eyes are on that December 18th, 2019 release. EW mentioned that though there are no actors confirmed for the upcoming movie, “many actors, including A-list talent, are vying for key roles.”
Masters of the Universe initially started as a toy line back in 1982 and created an entire narrative within this toy set that centered around the planet of Eternia. This spurred a cartoon adaptation, as well as a comic line, a spin-off (She-Ra: Princess of Power), and more – including our beloved video games. This entire franchise was a paramount fixture for that time, quickly escalating into a wide-spread fandom that continues to inspire to this day, with a few bumps here and there.
The popularity of this franchise did begin its decline in ’87 when a live-action film by Cannon Films saw the light of day with Dolph Lundgren stepping into the boots of He-Man. The Masters of the Universe hit a snag with it’s fan-base and the line of toys were discontinued in ’88. Throughout the decades that followed, many attempt were made to recapture the spirit of this fandom, and 2019 looks to be doing just that. Will this film succeed?
