New Guardians of the Galaxy Toys Feature a Dancing Kid Groot
When Marvel Studios first announced a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, not many people could see its potential. An obscure-ish space opera featuring a criminal crew of a music-obsessed human, violent green aliens, a talking raccoon, and a repetitive tree sounds extremely ridiculous on paper. The feeling of uncertain success reached into the property’s merchandise, with manufacturers unwilling to produce a large variety of toys for hungry collectors. As we all know, Guardians became a massive success and the movie’s collectibles were especially hot sellers. One of the most popular products was a dancing baby Groot that replicated a beloved scene from the film.
This time around, it seems Marvel has much more faith in their toys, with a large selection of figures being released alongside the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Among the new wave of Guardians swag is an updated version of dancing Groot made by Hasbro, complete with light-up eyes and sounds. Kid Groot dances to an audio clip of the song “Come a Little Bit Closer” by Jay & The Americans, but he’s not a picky dancer, as he will boogie to any music that is played nearby. Dancing kid Groot preorders begin on February 15th and will retail for around $34.99.
Another batch of Guardians figures from Diamond Select captures the core team’s look from the comic book series. Groot, Star-Lord, Drax, and a Rocket/Gamora duo figure all feature movable limbs, interchangeable hands and head pieces, and an interlocking base diorama pieces for them to stand on. Diamond Select is offering them as an optional set or as individual figures. This release method is outside the norm for Diamond, as they usually release toys such as these one at a time.
