The television and film industries have made it clear that adapting video game franchises for the small and big screens is a big part of their future. This year alone will see the likes of Nathan Drake, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Mario in theaters. One of the biggest success stories for video game films in recent memory was last year’s Mortal Kombat reboot movie. The film was one of the first box office successes back after the pandemic began and its ending left room for a sequel. Now, New Line has officially greenlit a Mortal Kombat movie sequel and has even brought a new writer on board.

No other specific details about the Mortal Kombat movie sequel have been given, but the previous film’s surviving characters and their respective actors from the first film are likely to return. This would include Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Hopefully, more is revealed soon, such as the casting choice for Johnny Cage, a fan-favorite series character that was teased at the end of the first film. Personally, I can’t wait to see a big-name Hollywood actor play a fictional big-name actor who punches people in the groin whilst doing the splits.
