The Resident Evil film franchise has officially broken the record for the most money made by a video game film series. According to Deadline, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter has already hit $35 million in Japan, just under a month since the film’s release. With this huge dollar sign flashing before our eyes, Sony brings even bigger news, as they project the global income for the film to be another $30 million, bringing the total global amount for the last film to nearly $80 million.

This impressive amount of revenue has everything to do with fan anticipation, as expressed by Josh Greenstein, President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution at Sony Pictures. In an interview with Deadline, he stated, “Resident Evil is an event film internationally… It’s been five years since the last film, and the global fanbase has been eagerly anticipating its return. Screen Gems has created the highest-grossing video game-based franchise of all time. We look forward to a strong rollout.”

In celebration of the series’ success, Sony pushed out a video on their official Instagram page. A Billion Thank You’s is currently live on their Instagram account, as a way to close out the swan song of the series and thank their loyal fans for sticking with them throughout the 15 year stretch Resident Evil has been hitting theaters. The video highlights Milla Jovovich(Alice), who never stopped putting her best foot forward to bring the character to life on the big screen, before announcing its official status as a billion dollar franchise and then cutting to The Final Chapter’s title logo.

It’s kind of a symbolic gesture, since The Final Chapter stands proudly as the title that pushed the Resident Evil film franchise over the milestone and closed out Alice’s story for good.
