Microsoft has recently announced that it has purchased Bethesda Studios and it’s parent company ZeniMax Media in a record breaking $7.5 billion transaction which is Microsoft’s largest video game purchase in the company’s history. Bethesda is well known for games such as The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, Dishonored and many, many more.

In a statement written on the Xbox website, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer went on to say “Bethesda’s games have always had a special place on Xbox and in the hearts of millions of gamers around the world. Our teams have a close and storied history working together, from the amazing first DOOM, and its id Tech engine, innovating games on PCs to Bethesda bringing their first console game to the original Xbox, the groundbreaking The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Over the years I’ve had many deep conversations with the creative leaders at Bethesda on the future of gaming and we’ve long shared similar visions for the opportunities for creators and their games to reach more players in more ways.”

ZeniMax Media which is headquartered in Rockville, Maryland has studios worldwide with over 2,300 employees that will now merge into the Xbox family, across many named studios that share ZeniMax as a parent company including Arkane, Alpha Dog and Roundhouse Studios. The purchase will also aim to boost revenue with the Xbox Game Pass which is their subscription service which offers access to hundreds of games for PC, Xbox and Android mobile devices.

Phil Spencer also went on to confirm that they “will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox game pass for console and PC.” This will allows over 15 million members access to AAA titles developed by ZeniMax studios and their offspring companies.

This will prove to be an interesting time as Bethesda has since created two games (Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo) to release on the PlayStation 5 in time console exclusives, but pending the this new deal with Microsoft and Xbox that may (or may not) change. That has yet to be discussed at this current time.
