Disco Elysium Television Series Officially In The Works
As video games continue their massive growth as an entertainment medium, they have become an increasingly popular source of inspiration for new television shows and film projects. Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu have proven video game characters can hold their own in the box office, and The Witcher and Castlevania have found success as series on Netflix. One surprising hit game last year was RPG Disco Elysium, which found much success on PC, and ended up winning several accolades at The Game Awards 2019. Now, it looks like the production house behind the Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be producing a Disco Elysium television series.
As reported on Variety, ZA/UM and dj2 Entertainment will be teaming up to create a new Disco Elysium television series. ZA/UM is the independent developer/publisher that created the RPG which has players controlling an experienced detective who must solve a murder case while also piecing together his own identity to do a night of drinking-induced memory lost. ZA/UM seems excited for this new series, as their lead writer Helen Hindpere states:
We’re so gratified at the response ‘Disco Elysium’ has received, and very happy to be teaming with dj2 to expand the franchise for other media and new audiences.”
Production dj2 Entertainment will be helping to adapt the series to television, which they have the proper experience to do. Their founder Dmitri M. Johnson served as a co-producer on this year’s successful Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The company also currently has projects in the works that will adapt video game franchises like “Echo” and “Sleeping Dogs” to television. This certainly seems like a good pairing, and hopefully the series stays loyal to the feeling of the game. Let’s just hope the memories of the game are not lost by the writers along the way.
