The world of animation has seen many changes throughout its lifetime, with so many developments occurring in recent decades. As most animation studios shift their focus to CG animation, one of the biggest holdouts has been Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. The legendary animation studio remained notoriously committed to the classic 2D anime style for all of their animated films. This was reflected in their reluctance to have Miyazaki’s films on any streaming service, that is until this year when the entire library came to HBO Max in the US and Netflix everywhere else. Now, it seems that Studio Ghibli is now finally taking a big step into the CG animation world.

Studio Ghibli announced their first fully CG-animated film ‘Aya and The Witch’ on the studio’s official website. The CG film will be an adaptation of the children’s book ‘Earwig and The Witch’ by Diana Win Jones, which focused on a young orphan girl who is adopted by a witch and must make decisions to find control in the house. Directing the film will be Goro Miyazaki, son of Hayao Miyazaki, whose previous credits include Studio Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill and Tales from Earthsea.

The film has been confirmed to premiere on NHK TV, but there is no word yet on plans for the film’s release to western audiences or whether or not it will have English dubs. Studio Ghibli has used CG for some aspects of their previous 2D films, but with this being their first fully CG film, it will be new territory for the studio. The house of Miyazaki has proven its track record before to create compelling new stories and creative techniques, so this new film should be at no risk of seeing that creative energy Spirited Away.
