Mario Golf: Super Rush Revealed, Includes RPG-Like Story Mode (VIDEO)

Mario Golf: Super Rush

The Super Mario series has gathered the Mushroom Kingdom for a variety of spots titles over the years, with none little more prestigious than the Mario Kart, Tennis, and the co-led Sonic Olympics series of games. All the while, Nintendo has sparsely released a new entry in the Mario Golf series, with the last new entry hitting the 3DS seven years ago, and a console release landing a whopping 18 years ago for the GameCube. With a new game decidedly long-overdue, Nintendo has finally revealed a modern Mario golfer called Mario Golf: Super Rush.

Unveiled at the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, Super Rush was shown to reunite multiple series characters for a new round of golf, such as Bowser, Daisy, Yoshi, and – despite not being invited to Super Smash Bros. – Waluigi. Similar to past titles, each player carries unique stats and has access to a number of tools to make their shots count. The Shot Gauge monitors the power of a swing and Scanning takes course terrain into account for those tricky putts. The game is also fully compatible with motion controls, allowing one to harken back to the days of Wii Sports Golf.

While the Switch release looks to have a traditional 18-hole experience in mind for players, a number of exciting modes are also being caddied alongside the game, namely a story campaign. Players will be able to create their own Mii golfer and rise through the ranks of the Mushroom Kingdom with the help of various Super Mario characters. While not an epic narrative like Mario Tennis Aces, Super Rush looks to liken more to an RPG-like adventure as players are offered the means to upgrade and customize their character with XP.

A number of multiplayer modes are also confirmed for Mario Golf: Super Rush across online and local couch play. In addition to a traditional arcade-style versus mode, the Nintendo showcase focused on a new incarnation of Speed Golf, which tasks up to four players with completing a course as quickly as possible. While that seems pretty familiar, the mode shakes things up by enabling all players to swing at the same time, eliminating the concept of turns and ramping up the competition in a battle royale-ish manner.

Mario Golf: Super Rush is currently set to release for Nintendo Switch on June 25th. Those interested in pre-ordering can do so on the official Nintendo website.
