Child Of Light And Werewolves Within Movie Adaptations In the Works, Ubisoft Reveals
The past few years have been an exciting time for gamers looking to see their favorite video games brought to life on the silver screen and streaming services, and there seems to be no sign of this trend slowing down. Netflix recently released the long-awaited second season of their animated Castlevania series, and next year will see the premiere of new live-action films based on Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu. Ubisoft displayed their initiative to turn their big games into films and TV series with their new motion picture division, and now they are furthering that pursuit with the newly announced Child of Light TV series and Werewolves Within film.
As reported on by Variety, Ubisoft recently announced the new adaptation projects as a part of their Women’s Film and Television Fellowship program. The studio selected two winning female screenwriters to have their choice of Ubisoft video game franchise transformed into a non-interactive version of visual art. One winner was Mishna Wolff, who selected the virtual reality game Werewolves Within as her subject to be made into a film. The game revolves around a group of villagers sitting around a fire, attempting to discern who among them is the werewolf in disguise. Given the self-contained nature of online rounds for the game, it makes sense for Werewolves Within to be adapted as a stand-alone film.
The other winner was Tasha Huo, who opted to create a live-action television series based on Child of Light, the RPG first released in 2014. Given the more lengthy narrative in the game, an ongoing television series seems like the right move. It appears that both women were quite pleased with their idea development process and Ubisoft’s handling of it, as Huo says, “It’s such an open, trusting environment here. It allows you to be vulnerable and trust the process.” Hopefully, Ubisoft extends the same attitude throughout the production for these adaptations, so that these projects can show what these talented ladies are truly capable of.
And also, we need more werewolf movies that don’t star hunky shirtless men. What do you guys think about the Werewolves Within film and Child of Light series? Let us know in the comments below!
