The Last Of Us Part II Was Designed Specifically For The Base PS4

There’s been quite a bit of news lately for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II. During the most recent State of Play, Sony unveiled brand new footage for the game featuring both our first look at Joel and the game’s official release date. Since then, the developer has explained the decision behind there not being a multiplayer component, as well as why the game isn’t considered an open-world title. Now, it has also been revealed that despite all the footage from Sony showing off the game on the PS4 Pro, The Last of Us Part II was designed specifically for the base PS4.

The news comes by way of Naughty Dog’s Emilia Schatz, who recently spoke with the folks at USgamer about the game and why it was designed for the base PS4. According to the lead designer for the game, the base PS4 is actually what she has on her desk, and the PS4 is what is considered to be the “development platform” for the upcoming title. “Our target platform is the PS4, the base,” Schatz said, “That’s actually what I’ve got on my desk at work, and so that’s what we sort of aim for.”

For those that haven’t seen a whole lot of footage from the game yet, it should be noted that the majority of the trailers we’ve seen have all been listed as running on PS4 Pro consoles. This is primarily due to Sony’s wish to drive sales for the souped up console, and while it does have its advantages of the base PS4 it is by no means necessary to fully enjoy The Last of Us Part II. “So yeah, you want to have that balance, but you know, there’s still a lot of optimization now to get done,” Schatz said. “What you saw here isn’t quite our final frame rate and final screen resolution, stuff like that.”

Regardless of which physical version you get, it should be noted that the game will ship with two discs, something that doesn’t typically happen with a PS4 title. Given how gorgeous the game looks and how expansive the story is said to be, it certainly makes sense for that to be the case.

The Last of Us Part II launches exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020.
