While some developers have been giving their games makeovers and re-releases, there is one franchise that will likely never see a remake return to its classic roots. Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said in a recent interview that he has no interest in living in the past. Instead, the creator looks to the future in developing new concepts, mechanics, and adventures.

I don’t really feel like I want to remake any of them. It’s more natural to always create new mechanics and new games.”

While some might argue that certain re-releases might qualify as remakes, such as the DS release of Super Mario 64, others would note that a port may not count. In the vein of Mario 64, fans are looking forward to Odyssey coming in October on the Switch. The Super Mario creator stated that this game was more akin to Sunshine and 64 in that it was less casual and more “on the core side” of the franchise.

So we’ve been making Mario games for over 30 years, and through that process, we’ve made changes to the games. Some games tended to be a little bit harder, and a little bit harder to play, and then so we teeter back to make it accessible to all kinds of gamers, and then we go back the other way. It’s been kind of a give and take in that way.”

It seems, on the surface, that the Super Mario creator has a kind of rhythm in development. The experimentation that Miyamoto brings to the franchise, and Nintendo brings to the console, has at times been hit or miss. But trying new things and expanding on the universe can be, in part, attributed to the success of the franchise. Fans will get to see first hand which way the pendulum falls on October 27th.
