Sony Was The Third Most Popular Publisher At E3 2019 Despite Not Being There

Last year, Sony made the surprise decision to pull out from E3 2019, marking the first time one of the ‘big three’ publishers didn’t have a presence at the show in a very, very long time. Outwardly, the company stated rather plainly that there wasn’t enough reason to attend, and that it would prefer to focus on its future releases. While the company certainly had its own reasons, many – including Xbox Boss Phil Spencer – said that E3 2019 absolutely suffered without Sony’s yearly show. Oddly enough, it appears that the same can’t be said of the reverse, as it has been revealed that Sony was the 3rd most popular publisher at E3 2019…despite not actually having a presence there.

The news comes by way of Twitter, which revealed that, following Nintendo and Xbox, Sony had the third most tweets of any game publisher this year, followed immediately by the likes of Square Enix and Bethesda. So now the major question here is, why? Well, part of that is because many of the games that were shown off during this year’s proceedings will be coming to either the PS4 or the PS5. Another absolutely major factor is that the Final Fantasy VII Remake earned a stop very close to the top when it comes to talked about games from E3, which, you guessed it, just so happens to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

Given that Sony hasn’t seemingly suffered much from not attending this year’s E3, it makes us wonder whether or not Sony – as well as other publishers – will choose to abstain from E3 2020. Sony’s actions this year may have been a catalyst for change, for better or worse.
