Sony CEO Hints At PlayStation Version Of Xbox Game Pass

PlayStation PS5 CES 2020

The new generation of console gaming has officially launched, and while there are plenty of folks who are enjoying their new hardware, there are likely even more awaiting additional stock. That said, new generation means new goodies, one of which appears to be a PlayStation version of Xbox Game Pass, which Sony CEO Jim Ryan recently hinted at.

During an interview with TASS (via Game Informer), Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan hinted at their answer to what is possibly the best deal in gaming. “There is actually news to come, but just not today,” Ryan said when asked about their response to Xbox Game Pass. “We have PlayStation Now which is our subscription service, and that is available in a number of markets.”

While there is PlayStation Now as well as Plus, they don’t quite match the juggernaut that is Xbox Game Pass. Sure, PS Plus offers free games each month as well as deals on other title, and PS Now offers players a chance to enjoy past games, it might not be good enough in others’ eyes. So, what could Sony do to make their subscription service(s) competitive?

For starters, it might not be best to create something identical to Xbox Game Pass. After all, PlayStation has a plethora of first-party titles and making those available on day one could result in negative effects. They could possibly flesh out PS Now and make it a more substantive service, and then combine it with PS Plus to make it one feature-filled subscription service that is a deal comparable to Xbox Game Pass.

It’s anyone’s guess at this point what PlayStation’s answer to Xbox Game Pass will look like, but we at least know there is “news to come.” We will just have to wait until then to learn more.
