New GTA Online Island Heist Is The Game’s “Biggest Update Yet” (VIDEO)

Cayo Perico Heist GTA Online

While not as frequent in previous years, Grand Theft Auto Online has been putting out a nice assortment of content since launching back in 2013. In between all the special seasonal offerings, developer Rockstar Games has also added a few considerable expansions to the multiplayer experience, with one of the most notable being last year’s long-awaited Diamond Casino Heist. With November upon us, GTA Online is now preparing to launch its next large-scale expansion, one that is being touted as the game’s “biggest update yet.”

Announced in a new Rockstar Newswire post, the Cayo Perico Heist was unveiled as the next big update headed to GTA Online on December 15th. Introducing a tropical “remote island compound” occupied by “the world’s most notorious drug dealer,” the expansion will see players tasked with breaking into the heavily-armed and secured fortress to obtain “valuable evidence” as well as “as much art, gold and drug money as you can carry.” One of the most notable aspects of the mission is the ability to either assemble a group of up to three players or go at it alone – a first for a heist in the game.

Called “the biggest GTA Online adventure ever,” an official description for the Cayo Perico Heist confirms the addition of an all-new island location to the Los Santos map (Cayo Perico) as well as new vehicles and tactical weapons, including “a very large, very versatile, and very heavily armed submarine HQ.” The update will also introduce “new social spaces to dance and party in with your friends,” the eventful appearance of “world-class guest DJs,” and a handful of fresh radio stations with “over 100 new songs.” A number of “surprises” were also teased to await players, with “more details” set to arrive ahead of Cayo Perico Heist’s release.

Ahead of today’s big reveal, Rockstar had previously teased a new expansion in the form of a cryptic video. Much of it wasn’t too telling, but it did feature some brief glimpses at the Cayo Perico compound in addition to a few flashes of areas around the island. With the heist now out of the bag, the update is sure to be exciting for GTA Online fans, especially as it gives players that much more to do in the expansive title as well as the choice to take down the debuting island alone or as part of a squad.

Grand Theft Auto Online is out now for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. The Cayo Perico Heist arrives on December 15th.
