Rage 2 Will Not Feature Loot Boxes
The bane of a gamer’s existence are microtransactions, but Rage 2 developers are keen on keeping loot boxes out of the equation. Though the idea of microtransactions aren’t inherently bad, the entire debacle involving Electronic Arts and Star Wars Battlefront II has given the entire concept an air of taboo. It’s been particularly difficult for upcoming games to even justify making it a feature, and it’s an especially heavy hammer dealt by the gaming community on EA’s table. Additionally, there’s enough of in-your-face adverts for it on the mobile gaming platform and online multiplayer titles that it may seem like the option over-saturates the market at times.
In fact, Avalanche Studios’ collaborative development partner id Software wasn’t afraid to throw some shade on the idea of loot boxes entering their game. In response to Game Star, studio director of id Software Tim Willits boldly stated, “We will not have any Lootboxes, I can say for sure. We have this novel approach: You buy the game and then you play it.”
Well, if gamers were looking for confirmation on their dissent against loot boxes, that’s as good a word as any. Furthermore, Willits confirmed the studios will approach Rage 2 with a “Games as Service” mentality, wherein they intend to bring post-launch content to the game. “Yeah, we want people to play Rage 2 longer, and we think we can bring some fun stuff that makes it possible,” stated Willits. “But we’ll talk about it in more detail as we move closer to the release of Rage 2 move.”
As to the type of content id Software and Avalanche Studios intend to bring to the table, more details will be revealed after the launch of Rage 2 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
