PS4 Spider-Man Suit Secrets Revealed In New Interview
A recent interview with Insomniac Games Art Director Jacinda Chew revealed some interesting facts about the upcoming PS4 Spider-Man game releasing later this year. The interview with Game Informer details the process of integration, scrapping, and recreating the design for this new Spider-Man. The interview also reveals just how much work goes into the design of a character before it reaches the hands of the players.
The PS4 Spider-Man title has gone through some difficulties in designing this character for a new in-game universe. Chew opened up about the thought process that went into the complete design of the suit, revealing that each color has a purpose. Beyond the design of his suit the team also focused on the fluidity of movement, Spider-Man’s body type, and what factors played into that.
Chew noted firstly that the PS4 Spider-Man is older and more experienced. Keeping that in mind, the team went for a suit that functioned for the needs of a more competent, experienced Spider-Man. For instance, the blue parts of his suit are designed to be flexible and allow for free motion, while the red is more armored pieces that might get hit frequently or scrape against buildings while swinging. Finally, the white seen on the chest, feet, and hands are carbon fiber meant to absorb impact. Fans may also notice that the feet are different, reflecting more of an athletic shoe than the classic red boot.
The team also played with different builds for the PS4 Spider-Man ranging from skinny awkward teen to bulky line-backer. Ultimately they settled on someone with an athletic fighters build, which makes sense for the character. Insomniac Games also spent a lot of time sculpting Spider-Man’s range of motion to make him look authentic in his movement. While they initially tried to use an actor to do Spider-Mans swinging and crawling, they found that in CG it looked awkward and chose to focus on something that looked elegant and fluid in the game.
Getting a peek at how the game is designed definitely makes the title more interesting. Knowing there is a dedicated team focused on creating an immersive, natural, true to life experience should definitely make the PS4 Spider-Man title that much more exciting. Spider-Man launches exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro on September 7th, 2018.
