PlayStation’s Vita May be the Last of its Kind According to CEO Andrew House

Playstation's Vita

It is no secret that the Nintendo Switch is experiencing great success since its release in March. The Hybrid system allows players to go from playing in the comfort of their home to taking the sitch on the go. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, CEO Andrew House noted the reason for the success of the Nintendo Switch, however, doesn’t see Sony pursuing another one of PlayStation’s Vita handheld devices.

House stated that hybrid type game systems don’t offer much opportunity outside the Asian marketplace. This is likely due to the fact that the PlayStation’s Vita didn’t perform well outside of this market, putting the companies focus on other revenue streams. Here is what the CEO and President of Sony had to say about the difference in strategy:

The folks at Nintendo have their strategy and that’s great. We remain focused around a highly connected gaming experience and also coupled with having a great range of other entertainment experiences so you can reach multiple people on the big screen in the household.”

According to House, handheld systems aren’t doing as well because of smartphones. With more people only interested in carrying one device around with them, namely their cellphone, handhelds are losing traction in the wider market. While it hasn’t fallen off the table yet, it sounds like PlayStation’s Vita won’t be seeing an upgrade in the near or distant future.

The Vita experience was that outside of Japan and Asia, there was not a huge demand. The lifestyle shift toward the dominance of smartphones as the single key device that is always with you, was the determining factor.”

This also doesn’t mean that Sony is out of the picture for games on the go either, even if PlayStation’s Vita is off the table. A recent subsidiary created by Sony called ForwardWorks will be making games for iOS and Android. This could mean that as the technology continues to improve, we could see Vita-like titles appear on our smartphones.
