Overwatch developer Blizzard Entertainment has not been shy about their character designs and how they came to be. They’ve explained in the past that the final designs that players can use today were only a fraction of the ideas that came to mind when the game was being created for its original release, such as the famed “Jetpack Cat”. While some characters never made the cut like the “Jetpack Cat,” others were drastically altered before making it into the final game, such as Pharah’s mother Ana.

While in a recent interview during the Toronto Fan Expo, Assistant Art Director Arnold Tsang sat down to discuss the evolution that occurred with certain heroes in Overwatch, one of which was Ana. Tsang explained that in the early stages of the character’s development, Geoff Goodman – the Lead Designer for Overwatch – designed her as an alchemist.

Following this “alchemist” aesthetic, Ana was originally designed wearing a hazmat suit with a wide range of tubes and vials that looked incredibly similar to the Batman villain, Bane. Of course this design evolved over time to become the hooded sniper fans know and love today.  While this concept didn’t make it into the game in full, remnants of the idea can be seen within Ana’s biotic weaponry.
