Nintendo Doesn’t Consider Xbox Or PlayStation As Competition (VIDEO)
Nintendo is a company that largely seems to follow the beat of its own drum, and this desire to do their own thing has served them both well and poorly over the years. For every great triumph, like the innovation of motion controls, there’s often a substantial failure to match, such as the Virtual Boy. It should be no surprise that the company isn’t really fazed by its console competition, even while PlayStation 4 and Xbox One continue their strides in both popularity and functionality.
Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently upheld this independent outlook when speaking at this past week’s GeekWire Summit. Among talk of Nintendo’s history and current projects, Fils-Aime was eventually asked whether he considers Sony and Microsoft as competitors, to which he responded with a simple “I don’t.” Fils-Aimé elaborated that he actually considers the concept of “entertainment time” as his main competitor, the carefree time players have when not fulfilling essential duties like working, sleeping, or eating.
That time you spend surfing the web, watching a movie, watching a telecast of a conference; that’s all entertainment time that we’re competing for, minute by minute. So, my competitive set is actually much bigger than my direct competitors in Sony and Microsoft. I compete for time and when I do that, I have to be creative and innovative in order to win that battle for time.”
Aiming higher than the medium of gaming itself is a pretty big aspiration, but one certainly can’t argue when it has yielded some major success over the last year. So far, over 20 million units of the Nintendo Switch have been sold and a bevy of third-party developers have demonstrated their enthusiasm for the platform in releasing numerous high-profile ports. There’s even reports of an updated iteration of the hybrid console hitting stores sometime in 2019. You can check out Reggie Fils-Aime’s full conference below:
