Nintendo Files Trademark Application for ‘Eternal Darkness’

Eternal Darkness

It’s been revealed that Nintendo has filed a trademark for the previously dormant GameCube game Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. With rumors currently swirling about GameCube games being made available on Nintendo’s upcoming Switch console, it seems as though Eternal Darkness won’t have much more time to spend in the shadows.

Eternal Darkness
The trademark was sent in to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this week, but the reason for the filing has yet to be elaborated on by Nintendo. Recent rumors about a potential GameCube Virtual Console and an imminent Switch presentation could point towards the game seeing a digital release in the future. However, this could also be Nintendo re-upping their trademark for ownership purposes, but the timing of it might suggest otherwise. Speculation, people!

For those not in the know, Eternal Darkness was a genuinely great horror game for the normally kid-friendly Nintendo GameCube. It offered up creepily designed levels enhanced by trippy “sanity effects” that simulated the main character’s descent into madness. The game was released in 2002 and was praised by numerous outlets for its unique gameplay elements, but it ultimately suffered from poor sales, as is the case with most underrated games. It has since gone on to achieve a cult following, an audience Nintendo would be foolish to ignore.
