New Assassin's Creed Rumored for Next Year, Taking the Franchise Back to Italy

The Assassin’s Creed series has arguably reached its peak with last year’s release of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the game featuring a massive world, dynamic story, and a bevy of planned DLC. Even while Ubisoft seems preoccupied with adventures in Ancient Greece, it appears we may have a new Assassin’s Creed experience on our hands, one that could return to the familiar setting of Italy.

This latest rumor comes from a post on 4Chan, where a user claimed to have inside knowledge of Ubisoft’s next efforts, including a few notes about an unannounced Assassin’s Creed game codenamed “Legion.” The game was said to be scheduled for release in 2020, taking place in Ancient Italy during “the end of reign of Marcus Aurelius” and “during the struggles of his son Commodus and the year of 5 emperors.” It’s noted that these are the same characters that also appeared in the Ridley Scott movie Gladiator.

Assassins Creed Odyssey Storm Attack

As with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, players will have a choice between two protagonists, Cassius or Lucia, the two being “descendant of the characters from Origins and Odyssey.” Keeping in line with recent games, Legion will also feature choice-based gameplay as well as “heavy RPG elements and same story for both characters.” It’s premised that this new Assassin’s Creed will the the final entry in the dubbed “Ancient Trilogy,” using this opportunity to “tie up some loose ends” left by previous games.

The post goes on to talk about finer details such as the game’s story, which will be “more involved in assassins and politics” this time around in effort to bridge the gap between new and old fans. The map will mostly stay localized to mainland Italy with “small part of Gaul and Germania” also being part of the game. A “revised mercenary and cultist system” is also said to be in the works.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Leap

Those hoping for a return of the series’ previous Italian protagonist Ezio Auditore da Firenze may be a bit disappointed. As The Year of Five Emperors happened around 193 AD, it’s unlikely that players might have a run-in with Ezio, especially as the two are separated by over a thousand years of time difference. Of course, that’s only if this rumor ends up being true. Randomly appearing details on 4Chan don’t exactly ring conclusive and there’s been plenty to suggest that Ubisoft is much more inclined to space out their releases in favor of add-ons and expansions. We’ll just have to see on this one.

What do you think? Does any of this seem like it could be true?
