Mortal Shell Open Beta Now Available On PC

Announced just a few short months ago, the dark and visually stunning souls-like Mortal Shell has entered its open beta phase thanks to widespread demand. Developer Cold Symmetry made the announcement during a developer interview that took place last month alongside roughly 10 minutes of gameplay footage.

For those unfamiliar, Mortal Shell is a third-person souls-like title that takes heavy inspiration from both the Dark Souls series and even older souls-like games such as Severance: Blade of Darkness. Players take on the form of a fragile entity that must utilize ‘shells’ it comes across – essentially class-specific husks – in order to progress throughout the game. Part of the title’s drive is to seek out different shells and figure out which shell’s playstyle bests suits the both the player and the area they are attempting to traverse. Here’s a significant chunk of gameplay:

Mortal Shell is now in its open beta phase and available to test out over on the Epic Games Store. Here’s a breakdown of the game for those curious:

  • Possess Lost Warriors – The lost remains of defeated warriors are yours to discover. Awaken these Mortal Shells, occupy their bodies, and master unique combat styles.
  • Iron Sharpens Iron – Combat is strategic, deliberate, and unforgiving. Commit your sword only when an opportunity opens.
  • Face Formidable Foes – Your path is guarded by adversaries, devoted to inscrutable gods. Behold creatures both pitiable and grotesque and muster your courage and face them down.

Mortal Shell is slated to release in Q3 of 2020.
