Mortal Kombat 11: Ronda Rousey Rumored For Sonya Blade

Mortal Kombat 11: Ronda Rousey Rumored For Sonya Blade

UPDATE: It turns out the leak was real. Ronda Rousey was confirmed by NetherRealm Studios to be voicing Sonya Blade during the Mortal Kombat 11 reveal event. The original story is as follows.

The brutal fighting franchise of Mortal Kombat is set to return later this year with Mortal Kombat 11, having made its big unveiling at this past Game Awards ceremony. The weeks since haven’t offered too much in terms of follow-up reveals, but all that looks to change with NetherRealm Studios hosting an official reveal event scheduled for January 17th.

Ahead of the series’ next Outworldly tournament, it looks as though a few details may have been leaked from next week’s upcoming event. A Reddit user (via TheNerdMag) has alleged that UFC/WWE star Ronda Rousey will be revealed as part of the Mortal Kombat 11 voice cast, portraying the character of Sonya Blade in the game. The leak states that the community event will officially announce Rousey’s vocal role alongside some hypeworthy footage.

Ronda Rousey will be at MK Day and will be part of the livestream stage presentation. We’re preparing a short video to introduce her and announce her as the voice of Sonya. I’ve started sending over what we have for Sonya, which hasn’t been much so far.”

The above information is said to have come from a apparent email mix-up, where NetherRealm looks to have sent the Redditor a series of details not meant for public eyes. According to the internal document, its revealed that a new fighter named “Geras” is on track to be unveiled at the event as well, showcasing the fighter with a sizzle reel of “gameplay and cinema.”

While it would be pretty easy to fake this kind of leak, there’s actually a bit of evidence to suggest it may be the real deal. The leak, which also included a peek at some very familiar cover art, was originally posted to Reddit on December 14th. This would be nearly a month before NetherRealm boss Ed Boon would reveal the same Scorpion-centric cover in an official capacity. The fact that the leak was repeatedly removed immediately after it was posted may also be a telling sign of its authenticity.

It’s undeniable the star power Ronda Rousey holds at the moment, having transformed her dominance in the octagon into a big-screen acting career and a successful run in the WWE as Raw Women’s Champion. It’d be a no-brainer decision to include the bankably tough athlete in a new Mortal Kombat game, especially in a capacity such as hardened Special Forces officer Sonya Blade. Whether it’ll actually come to pass may seem like a real possibility, but it still wouldn’t be as concrete as official confirmation. We’ll only know for sure during next week’s MK community event when it goes live on January 17th.

Mortal Kombat 11 releases for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on April 23rd.
