Did Microsoft Steal This Fan-Made Concept Design For Recent PUBG AD Campaign?
Update: Microsoft has officially removed the artwork in question.
One of the biggest success stories in gaming this year most certainly was PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. For most of the year, the unfinished game was only available through Steam Early Access, yet became the most played Steam game ever. As such, the full version of the game was released earlier this month, both on PC, as well as the console-exclusive version on Xbox One. Microsoft has been eager to promote the game’s release on their console, even going so far as to host a contest with a Hawaii vacation as a prize. However, this eagerness may have backfired, as Microsoft has allegedly copied a fan’s concept for a promotional Xbox PUBG Ad.
Last month, Reddit user Macsterr posted their promotional material concept artwork on the PUBG Reddit page. Now, Macsterr has shared the original concept artwork with a new promotional image currently being released on Microsoft’s official social network feeds. The new ad released by Microsoft shares some big similarities to the art created by Macsterr, namely the same positioning of a PUBG player avatar in a grassy field positioned perfectly along the surface of an Xbox One console. Naturally, many of the responses to the new ad have accused Microsoft of stealing the concept without properly attributing Macsterr’s work.
There are some differences that give Microsoft some legal leeway, however, as the Xbox and PUBG logos are positioned differently in the ads, and the Xbox consoles pictured are different colors. Still, the similarity between the images are pretty striking, and Microsoft has not commented yet on whether or not the new ad was an unintentional copy of Macsterr’s image or not. If this were to become a legal battle, given the size of Microsoft, it would certainly be interesting to see which party would be the last one standing in court. Do you guys think Microsoft stole Macsterr’s Xbox PUBG Ad? Let us know in the comments below.
