Metal Gear Solid Film Director Wants To Create A Metroid Movie

Prime 4

It’s been a long time spent in pre-production for the Metal Gear Solid movie, but director Jordan Vogt-Roberts just turned in the script for the film and it’s barreling toward progress. He even mentioned that it is “one of the coolest scripts” he’s ever written. After gaining approval from the legendary video game developer, Hideo Kojima, the Kong: Skull Island director is excited for this new venture in video game adaptations. Already on a roll, Vogt-Roberts has ideas on a Metroid movie as well.

Exploring the components that make an adaptation great, he explored other grand motion picture ideas as well. Speaking on the influence video games have on film, there’s a certain female protagonist named Samus Aran he wants to adapt into a cinematic feature. According to an interview with IGN, Vogt-Roberts would love to create a Metroid movie, but it might be “too crazy” to realize.

I have a pitch for a Metroid movie. They’ll never let me. It’s too crazy. It legitimately would be [Samus] alone. It would be a little bit of her talking to herself, but as soon as they introduce other talking characters in those games, to me it loses everything. You put her alone and it’s almost got a little bit more to do with the silence of a movie like Drive. Like the quietness and having it be like a real intense mood piece, but mixed with sci-fi.”

As a long-time fan of old-school and modern gaming, Vogt-Roberts is phenomenally equipped to create cinematic versions of video games, but he believes there are others out there just like him. “Each game has its own language, right?” Vogt-Roberts began. “Like Metroid and whatever you want to play, Final Fantasy, each have their own internal logic systems that if you don’t understand you’re like, ‘Well, what is this.’ And I think there is a wave of filmmakers coming right now who grew up on that and understand that logic.”
