League Of Legends’ K-Pop Video Grooves Its Way Into Beat Saber (VIDEO)
It wasn’t long ago when League of Legends burrowed its way into the brains of the entire internet following the reveal of “POP/STARS,” a K-Pop-infused video starring a band of stylish digital musicians dubbed K/DA. The infectious tune as well as its stunning accompanying music video became an instantly trending topic among ‘League‘ fans as well as those just appreciative of the quartet’s production.
Over a month out from POP/STARS’ release K/DA still manages to hold the internet’s attention hostage, the video having recently crossed over 100 million views on YouTube. The electrifying performance from Ahri, Akali, Evelynn and Kai’Sa has become so big that the fiery track has now willed itself as a featured song in the VR rhythm game Beat Saber.
Going live today, the bass-thumping melody of POP/STARS has now made the cut for Beat Games’ popular lazer-swiping title, League of Legends developer Riot Games announcing the collaboration in a recent blog post. Speaking on the “thrilling” prospects of the crossover, Riot revealed the glorious team-up happened pretty much on a whim following the team’s own heated round of Beat Saber.
The most thrilling projects we work on often begin with a simple thought: ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if League players were able to….’ That’s how the collaboration between us and Beat Games, the indie studio behind Beat Saber, came about. We’d been hacking and slashing our way through Beat Saber at the same time ‘POP/STARS’ launched and the fantasy was inescapable: if only it was possible to play this song in Beat Saber. No harm in asking, right?”
As evident by the above gameplay, the proposed “dream” collaboration with K/DA came together pretty well. In fact, it went extremely well according to Riot. The studio’s initial presentation with Beat Games was said to have inspired heavy smiles from everyone involved, the mutual enthusiasm continuing as the song was greenlit and made its way through development.
After we played the song for them during a video meeting, we could see grins break out on their faces. Beat Games clearly shared our passion for both music and games. The collaboration was a dream. They brought their S-game to the design of the beat map, adding some customisation to the level that should get K/DA fans hyped. One of our Riot engineers – a massive Beat Saber junkie – got to offer feedback on early builds.”
Over the last few weeks, POP/STARS has taken over the internet and as of today, has also invaded Beat Saber. The game’s latest update saw a few tweaks to the practice mode alongside the addition of one of the year’s most flame-inducing pop tracks. Here’s to all the wild and groovy arm flailing ahead of us.
Beat Saber is out now for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, and PlayStation VR.
