A Labyrinth Stage Musical Is Officially In Development

While not having much of an impact back when it released in 1986, Jim Henson’s fantasy film Labyrinth has since gone on to become a cult classic, while also cementing the role of Goblin King Jareth as one of David Bowie’s most iconic roles. Though Bowie has since passed from this world the love of Labyrinth lives on, and it has been revealed that a Labyrinth stage musical is on its way.

In a recent interview with Forbes, Henson Company CEO Brian Henson, son of Jim Henson, announced that a Labyrinth stage musical is in the early stages of bringing Labyrinth to the stage. “We are working on a theatrical adaptation of the original movie for the stage,” Henson said, who at the same time revealed that a sequel to the Labyrinth movie was also in the works. “Those are the two areas of excitement for the Labyrinth property that we have. We are working on both of those but I certainly don’t have a timeline for them.”

Though typically something as high profile as a Labyrinth stage musical suggests that it would debut on Broadway, that isn’t necessarily the case. When asked where the musical would debut, Henson confirmed that Broadway, while not out of the cards, isn’t the focus. “Not necessarily Broadway,” he said. “It could be for London’s West End, but it will be a stage show, a big theatrical version. It’s very exciting.”
