Scarlett Johansson Says Black Widow Movie “Should be Done”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) introduced movie goers to Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in 2010’s Iron Man 2. Actress Scarlett Johansson has brought the comic book character to life in five already released MCU films, so where is her solo film? Many fans of her character have been asking the same burning question. The actress seems to agree that a Black Widow film “should be done.”

Johansson is out promoting her next blockbuster movie, Ghost in the ShellIn a recent appearance in Total Film Magazine, the famed actress addresses the Black Widow stand alone film that we’ve all been waiting for. For those that don’t know, Kevin Feige is the President of Marvel Studios. He’s the man responsible for the current success of the MCU. According to Johansson, both her and Feige are both on board for the solo film:

“I’ve talked to Kevin Feige about it. We’re creatively really compatible.  I think we both agree that the character is right for a standalone, it’s just a case of timing at this point for both Marvel and myself.”

Marvel’s cinematic universe has an ever-growing roster of characters. The anthology of shared universe films began in 2008 with Iron Man, and has not stopped since. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Doctor Strange, and Ant-Man all already have solo films. Spider-Man, Black Panther, and even Captain Marvel all have individual movies coming out in the coming years. That’s a pretty full schedule and a huge roster. With so many characters already planned, it’s a little understandable that there are some scheduling issues. Johansson shed some light on that as well:

“Marvel has a really huge roster. They’re looking four years ahead. I also have a lot of things that I want to do, if I did it, I would dedicate myself completely to making it amazing. It would have to be the best version that movie could possibly be. Otherwise, I would never do it.

At this point, giving Black Widow her own film would be difficult in the sense that it would have to be very well written. She’s an already well established character within the MCU, that makes an origin movie seem kind of unfitting. Creating a new film that sends her on a solo mission after everything that’s happened within the MCU would be tricky, to say the least. There would obviously be some very high expectations of a Black Widow singular outing. Johansson feels that the fans want it, and if it’s going to be done, it needs to be done right:

“[I] don’t know if I have the capacity for it. I think the fans were adamant about it, it could be done. It should be done, probably.

“It’d have to be done the right way, though. It’d really have to be its own standalone and its own style and its own story. But there’s a lot of great stuff that you could do with it. It could just be awesome.”

A Black Widow movie isn’t on the books as of yet, but there is hope. A lot will come down to timing within the MCU’s already busy schedule. In the meantime, we’re sure to see some Romanoff style ass kicking in Avengers: Infinity War, which is currently filming.

Do you think a Black Widow movie could fit properly within the shared movie-verse? Do you think that the character is already too established as a team member to send her off on her own?
