Half-Life Echoes Mod Offers New Perspective Of Black Mesa (VIDEO)

Half-Life Echoes

The original Half-Life is a game that has seen oodles of mods arrive following its release in 1998, with some such as the fan-made remake Black Mesa even receiving official blessing from Valve. While these fan-made mods are nothing new, one of the game’s more impressive creations was released only recently in the form of Half-Life Echoes.

Touting a new perspective of the classic shooter we remember, Echoes brings to light an untold account of the strange in-game happenings surrounding Black Mesa. Following a character known only as “Candidate 12,” players are able to explore numerous new areas and encounter unfamiliar enemies that Half-Life‘s main protagonist Gordon Freeman was not around to experience. The mod’s trailer, which can be seen below, even teases an appearance from the enigmatic entity G-Man, proving once again we’ll never be rid of that interdimensional troll.

The most impressive aspect of Half-Life Echoes is the fact that it was created by a single passionate fan. First-time modder James Cockburn spearheaded the project as early as 2014 and worked over the next four years to streamline his ideas into the result we have today. Since the mod’s release, the awesome effort has received a great amount of recognition, notably aggregating a high 9.5 rating on ModDB.

Half-Life Echoes is now available for download on ModDB where version 1.3 recently went live. It should be said that this mod is only compatible with the Steam edition of Half-Life, leaving past variants made for Source and the original PC disc unable to apply the update.

What do you think? Are you now having the happiest day of your Half-Life, or does the lack of disc-based support have you hitting up Steam for a digital copy?
