God of War Director Cory Barlog Compares Combat To FIFA Soccer
With the official release date for God of War having been announced late last month, fans of the iconic series have been chasing after new information about the game and its combat mechanics with increased fervor. While not much is still known about the title’s combat system, God of War director Cory Barlog is here to throw us a bone or two, though his information may seem a bit… odd. In a recent interview with Gamesradar, Barlog manages to liken some of the God of War combat mechanics to, of all things, FIFA.
For some much needed context, God of War director Cory Barlog recently mentioned that there would be no Quick Time Events (QTEs) within the new game. As a replacement, Kratos and his son Atreus can team up for some potent combinations, many of which will also depend on the weapon Kratos is using. Barlog then goes on to compare the play style of both game series, here:
[FIFA is] the same game every time you play but it’s extremely sort of non-deterministic. Every game is different, despite every game being the same; there’s this drama that exists in every single match, even when you’re playing the same teams. There’s a magic to video games encapsulated in the idea that I don’t ever want to lose even if I am making something that’s trying to tell a story, and we develop these characters to allow you to feel like there’s freedom here, and that is the joy of games.”
Undoubtedly it won’t be easy to fully discern what Barlog means without first playing through the game. The director has been a part of the God of War series from the very beginning, so if there’s a comparison to be made between the series and the FIFA games, well, there probably is. Thankfully, those looking to kick around some severed heads need only wait until April 20, 2018, when God of War releases exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
