Gears 5 Microtransactions Confirmed, But There Won’t Be Loot Boxes
Gears 5 has excited many Xbox One owners since its announcement, not just as a new exclusive title, but as a sequel promising a new experience different from previous Gears of War games. Not just visible with the exclusion of “War” from the game’s title, but with Kait now as the lead player character and the promise of Terminator DLC, Gears 5 is looking to bring the series in a new direction.
However, one aspect that some have wondered about is microtransactions, especially loot boxes, and their potential presence in Gears 5. Well, it seems a balance has been found, as Gears 5 microtransactions have been confirmed, but with one glaring omission. The Coalition recently released a new post with the news on their official Gears 5 website. They felt it proper to be as upfront as possible about their plans for monetizing the game, thus they confirmed there would be no season pass or gear packs.
They also confirmed that there would be no loot boxes in the game, although similar systems that rely on in-game currency and actions will be utilized. Their Tour of Duty system will reward players with gear upon completing various missions, and a Supply Drop system will give out random items after a certain amount of minutes of the game have been played by the player.
The Coalition did state that there will be an in-game currency called Iron in Gears 5 that will be purchasable with real money and used to purchase cosmetic items. A limited amount of Iron will also be given to the player for free as they play the game. Real money can also be used to purchase progression Boosts that will increase XP for various amounts of time based on the amount spent. It is nice to see The Coalition being so upfront about their microtransactions plans, and that they won’t be relying on a loot box system that could favor some players.
