Free DLC and No Season Passes for Titanfall 2 Says Developer

In a post to their official blog today, developer Respawn Entertainment announced that their first-person shooter Titanfall 2 will have completely free downloadable content (DLC). The post itself was to outline the differences between Titanfall 2 and other shooters on the market.

Titanfall 2 Free DLC

The confirmation of entirely no paid DLC comes just a day after the company tweeted “Remember when buying a game got you everything? Another reason Titanfall 2 is different, no season pass needed…”. It’s common practice these days for video games of every genre to offer paid DLC, take Battlefield 1 for example. You can get what they call their “Premium Pass” for the hefty price of $49.99 which is almost the price of the core game itself.

Season or “Premium” passes give players access to DLC as it’s released over a specified amount of time. A lot of the time paying for downloadable content leaves gamers with the feeling that they’ve been cheated, short changed or that they are being made to pay for content that should have been a part of the game from the beginning.

It’s become such a hot issue within the gaming community in fact that there are literally hundreds of satirical memes and articles pointing out just how much gamers dislike the practice. This is one of the reasons that make Respawn’s decision such a bold move. Doing away with season passes and paid downloadable content sounds like a win for gamers everywhere but does that in turn mean that we might end up paying more upfront for games in general only to have developers create less DLC?

The team over at Respawn is definitely sending a loud message to gamers and perhaps an even louder one to their competition. Titanfall 2 hits shelves tomorrow Oct. 28th.
