Final Fantasy Whiskey Coming Soon – Will Cost Some Serious Gil

Final Fantasy Whiskey

Square Enix has been celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series for about a year now, and the Japanese publisher has shown no signs of slowing down the festivities. Ever since late January 2017 countless crossover products and promotions have been announced in celebration of the series’ 30th anniversary, from Final Fantasy fashion lines to special FF-themed wines to limited-time art exhibitions. Now, the latest celebratory product is a bit more mature and high-end in nature; preorders are now available for a special 30-year-old Final Fantasy whiskey.

Distributed by Japanese liquor retailer Shinanoya, the Final Fantasy whiskey was originally distilled in 1987 by famed Scottish distillery Glenfarclas, meaning it was distilled the same year as the Japanese release of the original Final Fantasy for Nintendo’s 8-bit Famicom. A single-malt refill hogshead, the whiskey features a special label that bears the Final Fantasy 30th anniversary logo created by famous character designer Yoshitaka Amano, featuring crystals and, of course, Chocobos.

Of course, a 30-year-old whiskey from a famed Scottish distillery is going to cost more than a few gil. Only 303 bottles are being made available for purchase, and each 23.7-ounce bottle is priced at 37,000 yen, or $330. Thankfully there doesn’t appear to be any price mark-up from normal, non-celebratory 30-year-old Glenfarclas whiskey, as typically a bottle sells for over $350, making this a rather reasonable deal (if you like whiskey).

Preorders are now available directly through Shinanoya branches, and preorders online will be made available through the company’s website on January 26. International shipping is available for both the Final Fantasy whiskey and most other products on the website. Any bottles that are not presold by February 2 will become immediately available for purchase, though with only a total of 303 available, we recommend putting some money down on January 26th before the whiskey disappears like food in front of Quina.
